Numerical Terminal IDs: Independent, Transparent, and Secure

Terminal IDs play a central role in cashless payment transactions, as they uniquely identify payment terminals and enable reliable transaction processing. Until now, the allocation of numerical terminal IDs was heavily regulated and tied to specific network operators. NetManagement now creates an independent, transparent, and flexible solution for POS protocols – independent of banks, acquirers, and network operators.

With every license, you receive a complete package – including a unique terminal identifier for secure transactions.


🌐 The Importance of POS Protocols and Terminal IDs

In the world of cashless payment transactions, POS protocols are essential for connecting POS systems with payment terminals. They define how these devices communicate with each other and ensure secure and efficient payment processing. Without uniform and functional POS protocols, the smooth exchange of payment information would not be possible.

One of the key elements in the interaction between POS systems and payment terminals is the terminal ID. This unique identifier ensures that each transaction can be clearly assigned to a specific terminal.


📍 What is a numerical terminal ID?

A terminal ID is a unique identifier assigned to each individual payment terminal (e.g., at a retail checkout or self-service machine). It can be compared to the serial number of a smartphone – each device has its own to distinguish it from others. The terminal ID plays a crucial role in payment processing because it:

✔ Serves to identify the terminal in the payment network
✔ Precisely regulates the clear association between the originator (e.g., POS system, vending machine, or card machine) and the executor (terminal, payment module, or method)
✔ Enables the secure processing of payments
✔ Ensures the traceability and transparency of each transaction
✔ Ensures proper settlement between the customer, merchant, payment service provider, and bank


📋 The special feature of numeric terminal IDs (cTerminal IDs)

While many terminal IDs consist of a combination of letters and numbers, there are certain POS protocols that only accept numeric terminal IDs. These include:

👉 ZVT (payment terminal standard)
👉 SPDH (Standard POS Data Host)
👉 CB2 (CashBack Protocol Version 2)
👉 Pay@Table (ZVT integration for restaurants)

Also, some card types, such as:

👉 China UnionPay (CUP)
👉 JCB
👉 girocard
👉 Bancontact

These purely numeric terminal IDs are also referred to as cTerminal IDs. The lowercase "c" stands for "cashier," meaning cash register, and emphasizes that these terminal IDs are specifically intended for use in cash register protocols and for controlling payment processes.


📚 Previous allocation and the role of NetManagement

Until now, numeric terminal IDs in Germany were allocated exclusively by the German Banking Industry Committee (DK) to network operators for the girocard network. This ensured that each terminal in the girocard system had a unique identifier.

Starting in early 2025, NetManagement will manage specific terminal ID ranges that are allocated independently of network operators and the girocard network.

This enables the independent allocation of terminal IDs for POS protocols – independent of banks, acquirers, alternative payment methods (APMs), or network operators.


👉 Why is an independent allocation body necessary?

A centralized allocation of numeric terminal IDs, independent of payment service providers, offers numerous advantages:

✔ Transparency: Merchants, terminal and software providers, and payment service providers receive a clear, standardized assignment of terminal IDs.
✔ Interoperability: A uniform allocation facilitates connection to various POS systems and payment terminals.
✔ Traceability: Each transaction can be clearly assigned to a terminal, reducing errors and misuse.
✔ Independence: Management by NetManagement prevents conflicts of interest between POS and POS software manufacturers, network operators, acquirers, payment service providers, and merchants.

High security standards are required when using numeric terminal IDs. Centralized allocation by NetManagement enables transparent and traceable documentation of each assigned ID.

The lidX test versions vary in terms of functionality and size so that you can test exactly what you need. Did you know? Supporting device-specific internal printers requires special drivers provided by the manufacturers. These drivers can increase the app size by more than a third. That's why we offer lidX versions with and without internal printer drivers.

External printers? No problem! They are connected either via Android drivers or manufacturer-specific external drivers - and this has no impact on the app size.

To accept cards, you need an NFC-enabled device. No NFC? No problem! The lidX app allows you to test alternative payment methods (APM), including well-known services such as SEPA direct debit, PayPal, Sofort, Twint and many more. With over 600 APMs available worldwide, there are no limits to your flexibility!

Support for devices without Google Mobile Services (GMS)
